Our 2020 Summer Intensive for Teens & Adults will be rescheduled for the Fall
Class Descriptions
BALLET
Ballet has been my main source of technical training for the last 20 years. I love being able to pass on new philosophies that take a once linear technique and turn it into a personalized tool for dancers. We will be exploring our understanding of body placement and mindfulness during these lessons. It is my goal to send each dancer away with a new and exciting outlook on this technique! |
JAZZ
Come join me in a fun, upbeat jazz class! We will be doing kicks, leaps and turns along with finishing the class with a jazzy combo! I grew up dancing both competitively and recreationally and received my Bachelors Degree in Dance: Performance & Choreography & Communication from EMU. I am currently continuing my education working towards my Master's degree in Teaching Artistry. I can't wait to dance with you all! |
INVERSIONS + BALANCE
Throughout my dance career I have taken interest in powerful movement, strength and control. I often like to explore these ideas through improvisation as well as choreography to test the limits of the body. In this class we will be exploring athleticism through the art of dance. There will be a strong focus on inverted movement, balance and control. We will break down the technique of weight shifting from the feet to the hands as well as introducing strengthening exercises to further support inverted movement. This class will consist of across the floor combinations, center work, choreography, and strengthening and conditioning. Dancers should wear longer pants or knee pads as we will be doing floor work. |
CONTEMPORARY FUSION
We’re going to embrace our inner freak in my contemporary/modern fusion class. This class will combine the techniques used in traditional modern dance with a more contemporary twist. My choreography tends to blend together staccato and gooey movements. We will be doing some floor work, long pants recommended. |
DANCE AS PROTEST
This class focuses on the way dance can be used as a political tool and form of protest. Many movement forms, especially social dance, were birthed in direct response to the experiences of particular communities. This class will emphasize the importance of preserving their histories and explore tools for creating political work in current times. Miryam Johnson is a Detroit based Dance Artist, Educator and Organizer. With degrees from Eastern Michigan University in Dance and African American Studies, Johnson’s work explores the intersection between improvised Black movement vernacular and creating a communal connection. |
NON TRADITIONAL PARTNERING
Partnering technique goes so far beyond a "base" and "flyer" relationship. I love reciprocal lifts in which both roles are fluid. In this class, we will explore connections across space and through physical contact. Dancers will learn how build a trusting partnership from grounded skills to flying skills, how to give weight and how to receive. |
